DOE-STD-1189-2016 Integration of Safety into the Design Process

This Standard provides requirements and guidance for the integration of safety into the design process for DOE’s Hazard Category (HC) 1, 2, and 3 nuclear facilities as defined in 10 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 830, Nuclear Safety Management. This Standard applies to the design and construction of:

   (a) new DOE HC 1, 2, and 3 nuclear facilities,
   (b) major modifications to DOE HC 1, 2, and 3 nuclear facilities, and
   (c) other modifications to DOE HC 1, 2, and 3 nuclear facilities that are managed under the requirements of
   DOE O 413.3B, Program and Project Management for the Acquisition of Capital Assets.

DOE technical standards become mandatory for DOE contractors only when the standards or invoking DOE directives are included as a contract requirement.
