History
In 2004, the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) MasterFormat™ revised the numbers and titles to adequately cover construction industry subject matter while providing additional space for more subjects at each level of classification. The older MasterFormat 1995 edition limited the room necessary the Divisions simply ran out of space to properly address topics. CSI resolved these limitations by arranging the digits into three sets of paired numbers, one pair per level. Pairing the numbers allowed for more subdivisions at each level.
- April 2006 - SpecsIntact adopted the Construction Specifications Institute's (CSI) MasterFormat™ 2004 Edition
- June 2010 - The UFGS adopted MasterFormat™ 2010 Edition.
The UFGS Master adheres to the current CSI MasterFormat revision.

Numbering Rules
The following rules apply to all Section numbers:
- MasterFormat Section numbers contain up to a total of 14 characters including the spaces and periods.
- MasterFormat Section numbers may range from a minimum of 3 levels (6 digits) to a maximum of 5 levels (10 digits).,
- MasterFormat Section numbers fifth Level is used by the UFGS to indicate the preparing Agency, District, or Region.
MasterFormat® Edition
Although the UFGS adheres to the current MasterFormat Edition, SpecsIntact provides backward compatibility by supporting Jobs created with the 1995 Edition for backward compatibility.
MasterFormat 1995 Divisions
For backward compatibility, SpecsIntact continues to support the MF95 Edition with older Jobs and Master.
