This is an area located at the bottom of the File drop-down menu that displays the names of the last files opened in the Editor. By clicking on a file on this list, you can reopen it. Files are added to the top of the list when closed (files that are currently open do not appear on the list). Currently, open files may be accessed through the Window menu.
